About Zericote wood
Zericote (Cordia Dodecandra) or as the Maya call it, Chakopte, is a versatile tree of Belize. It is a deciduous tree up to 30 m in height and 70 cm in diameter. Zericote can be used fully that its trunk is used as support beams and columns in rural houses; the bark and the wood have medicinal properties; the tea obtained from their infusion is used in traditional medicine to treat coughs and diarrhea. The wood is much sought after for the manufacture of furniture, handicrafts, veneer for plywood, and turned articles. This is because of its unique combination of creamy-yellow sapwood encircling swirls of brown and black grains in the heartwood. The leaves are used as sandpaper and as very effective scouring pads to clean household utensils. The flowers are an excellent source of pollen and nectar for bees; the fruits are edible and are used to make preserves and jams, or to feed animals. The trees are valued as shade and ornamental plants in parks, streets and gardens. And of course, the wood is much sought after by our artists to produce beautiful wood carvings such as the one you bought.
Caring for your Zericote/Hardwood product is very easy. Just keep in mind that it is a tropical alive dead wood. Exposure to extreme heat, cold, or dryness can lead to cracking and twisting. Please place your bowl/vase in a plastic bag and seal it till you have reached your destination. Simply rub a very thin coat of furniture oil (example: Old English Lemon Oil) or Mineral Oil for food use and seal it back in the plastic bag. After two days, apply the oil again but open up a 1/8" hole on the bag. Apply the oil every two days for a week time. This process limits the amount of air surrounding your product, especially when there is a large difference between the amount of moisture in the wood and your home/office, but the air in the bag is saturated, and it reaches the moisture content of the wood, it slows down and finally stops. After a week, apply the oil again, then your bowl/vase should be content with your local moisture. To clean off the grease, wipe with a damp cloth, dry and polish. Do not soak in water, as this will cause to cracking, twisting or mold.
